How we show our working
Strong opinions should come with clear evidence.
Facts, claims and interpretation
We aim to distinguish what an original source establishes, what someone has alleged and what is our own analysis. An unanswered question is not proof of wrongdoing.
Original sources first
We prioritise primary records where available. Reporting and social posts can provide leads, but repetition does not turn a claim into evidence. Material qualifications and contradictory evidence belong in the story.
Dates and corrections
Figures need dates, definitions and context. If a material error is identified, the article should be corrected with a visible explanation of what changed. Contact us with the relevant passage and supporting source.
Commentary and independence
Independent does not mean without a viewpoint. Opinion should be recognisable as opinion, and commercial relationships should be disclosed where relevant.
